Arne Zunker (www.zunker-online.de/) has also build the Opel Tachometer. He designed a PCB for it. He shows some pictures at: www.zunker-online.de/lcd/. I have copied some of the pictures here with some comments:

First of all the final working result!!!!

Arne has designed a PCB for the tacho meter. You can download a .zip with the files that he has send me. The ".lay" file contained in the zip was made with "Sprint Layout 3.0" The layout looks as follows:

The copper side (Bottom view, this picture is not to scale).

Again the copper side but now with the components placed. (Bottom view)

Unfortunately the PCB was exposed mirrored. Therefore the PIC and the connectors were placed on the copper side. The design as shown above is however correct.

This picture shows the numbering of the cableconnectors seen from the cable side of the connector. There are female connectors located at the PCB. The connector that comes from the car is also female. The connector of the TID is a Male connector.

The top left (Car Male) is connected to the lower left (PCB-Car Male). Connect pin number 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc.  This cable is actually a one to one cable. The position of the number 1 wire does not change, although the numbering is mirrored at one connector.

The connector on the top right (LCD Female) is connected to the connector on the lower right (PCB-LCD Male). Again connect pin 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc. The wiring of this cable is not random but was chosen to create an easy layout of the PCB.

In addition pins number 2 and 4 of the connector Car-Male need to be connected to the pins 2 and 4 of the connector LCD Female to enable the temperature readout. This can also be done on the PCB.

The other side.

He used a programmer that connects to the serial port of the computer in order to program the PIC16F84A. More information can be found at: www.galinsky.org/PICs/PICs_Teil_2/body_pics_teil_2.html and www.qsl.net/dl4yhf/winpicpr.html

I picked up the tacho signal at the bobbin. The car of Arne is a bit newer and there is a signal available denoted by the green wire in the red circle:

This connector is located behind the instrument panel above the steering wheel. More information including a howto can be found at: http://www.mathijssentechnics.nl/.

Testing with the engine on.

The PCB was placed in the center-console as the next pictures show:

PCB below the console

It will be placed behind or below the radio.
